Redwood and Tanoak Salvage Project

In our continuing efforts to restore and care for Mitteldorf Preserve after the damage from the Soberanes Fire, storms and flooding in 2016/2017, Big Sur Land Trust will be conducting a dead tree salvage operation. Limited solo hiking access will continue with opportunities to view the work at a safe distance.

No live trees will be felled. All selected redwood trees fell due to natural causes during or shortly after the fire burned through the property. The tanoaks succumbed to Sudden Oak Death or natural causes, and were felled as part of a CAL FIRE priority fuels reduction project.

Some of the salvaged coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) and tanoak (Notholithocarpus densiflorus) logs will be transformed into seasoned slabs and auctioned off in late 2020 to provide funding for continued fire recovery, forest management, youth programs, and infrastructure needs at Mitteldorf Preserve. The rest of the wood will be used for improvement projects at Big Sur Land Trust properties (e.g. decking, picnic tables, structure repair, trail infrastructure, etc.).
